Jesus prays for Lutheran School Leaders too! John 17:20-26

John 17:20-26   Gospel Reading for Sunday May 16th 2010

Sometimes I find the language of John difficult to translate into my level of thinking. In this instance I have found the CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH VERSION translation useful in helping me to get a better grasp of what Jesus is saying here. You might like to compare the two versions. John 17:20-26 (CEV)

Say no more really ... what reassurance for us to know that Jesus prays for us! Further, He prays for our work of helping the people of this world to come to know Him.

I thought also that it would be good to set aside a few moments this week to reflect on Ascension Day. This significant event in the life of Jesus seems to slip by often without us even noticing. Pentecost ten days later usually gets a fair wrap, but because Ascension Day always falls on a Thursday it is easy to miss. The reading listed in the Lectionary for Ascension Day is Luke 24:44-53.

Well what do you make of that? One short verse to record a remarkable event and a dramatic physical exit from this earth!

51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.

It's no wonder that Ascension tends to slip by. Perhaps we could make a little more of it this year.
Note the disciples' response ... (v 52) Then they worshiped Him

May God strengthen and encourage us through the knowledge that Jesus is praying for us and our work.
