I am going to the Father John 14:23-29

John 14:23-29   Gospel Reading for Sunday 9th May 2010

Even though John 14 occurs pre-crucifixion, as we continue with our post-Easter readings,  Jesus focuses his teaching on preparing the disciples for what lies ahead after his death and resurrection.

The above verses taken in isolation are possibly hard to grasp. I encourage you to take the time to expand the reading to take in the entire chapter of John 14. (Just click on the third icon along in Bible Gateway - the EXPAND icon). We then get a much better picture of what is happening here.

A few points that have stood out for me:
  1.  First of all, our selected reading comes as a response to a series of questions from the disciples. The nature of these questions again suggests that the disciples just don't get it.
  2. As we lead up to Ascension and Pentecost in the coming two weeks, here we have one of the strongest Trinitarian passages in the whole of scripture. Father Son and Spirit are clearly referenced in this one reading.
  3. One thought however kept on coming back to me ... it is the certainty of the words that Jesus uses ... I am going to the Father.
Do we think and speak those same words ...

I am going to the Father

... with a similar degree of certainty?

Lord as we lead our schools, help us to model our faith with a certainty that will allow us to "show people Jesus!"
